Jonathan FeBland
Jonathan was born in London, England
in 1960. His piano studies began at the tender age of 4. He was
educated at Haberdashers' Aske's School and studied Piano and
Trumpet there, leading the brass section in the Senior Orchestra
for five years.
During his A-Level course he composed his first two works - a Flute duet and 'Sketch' for Brass Ensemble - both were performed while he was still at school.
He was offered a place at the Royal Academy of Music in 1978 and among his composition professors were Gordon Crosse and Paul Patterson. During his time at RAM (1978-82) he received over 50 performances of different compositions both in England and Europe and was also awarded several composition prizes by the Royal Academy. He also organized three full-length concerts entirely of his own compositions there while still a student.
After graduating college there were numerous performances, particularly of chamber and piano music, many of which were given by the Concert Pianist, Louis Demetrius Alvanis.
Since his graduation Jonathan has continued to compose as well as teach. He has also had works accepted by the SPNM and BBC Radio 3 as well as more than a dozen South Bank performances.
In 1985 he had works published by Universal Edition and in 1992 had further works in print with Bardic Edition. This was followed by premiéres of works at QEH and St. John's Smith Square. Most recently, he has signed a contract with the British Music Publisher 'Samuel King'
Jonathan feels he is continuing an essentially English tradition by dividing his works into two distinct genres - serious and light/educational music. His lighter works present attractively melodic material for performers who are just starting to work on more advanced pieces and his serious music provides a challenge for both performers and audiences alike.
His recently completed compositions include a Third English Suite for Orchestra and a group of pieces for various wind instruments entitled 'Entertainments'.
Jonathan's talents aren't limited to music. He writes fanciful Poetry, Sitcoms, and has also penned a full-length Stage-play. Jonathan also teaches Piano, Composition and Music Theory to all levels from Beginners to University Students privately at his home in Edgware, Middlesex (North West London).
Jonathan makes use of his computer to compose music. He creates all the sounds composers of the past such as Mozart, would have had to do on Pianos and Harpsichords in his own studio. He explains: 'Crescendos, diminuendos, tempo changes, and every little refinement can be programmed'. He also states: 'That takes hours of programming, but once you've got the data it's very useful. I've got the compositions and performance all in one'. With this technology he has been able to present concerts for the public on his computer.
His most current project is a set of solo jazz piano pieces aimed at the educational market.
